Il fut publi\u00e9 en 1915, en pleine Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, par Georges Cr\u00e8s et Cie\u00a0\u00c9diteurs, alors que l\u2019ennemi d\u2019hier \u00e9tait devenu notre alli\u00e9 face \u00e0 l\u2019Allemagne de Guillaume II.\u00a0Ce qui justifie cette association d\u00e9routante eu \u00e9gard au contexte est qu\u2019en d\u00e9pit des diff\u00e9rences, autant durant l\u2019\u00e9pop\u00e9e johannique que pendant la Grande Guerre, la France est en proie \u00e0 l\u2019envahisseur, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger, au barbare conqu\u00e9rant. En ayant recours \u00e0 cette figure militaire fran\u00e7aise s\u2019il en est \u2013 qui n\u2019a pas encore \u00e9t\u00e9 sanctifi\u00e9e, juste b\u00e9atifi\u00e9e \u2013\u00a0l\u2019auteur voulait, en plus de donner du baume au c\u0153ur \u00e0 ses compatriotes subissant\u00a0l\u2019effroyable \u00e9preuve des tranch\u00e9es, aller \u00e0 rebours de l\u2019\u00c9tat r\u00e9publicain, qui tendait alors \u00e0 cr\u00e9er \u00e0 travers le patriotisme une nouvelle religion, en insistant sur les dimensions th\u00e9ologiques du conflit. Ainsi celui-ci est \u00e0 comprendre selon Bloy non comme une \u00ab croisade \u00bb pour la d\u00e9mocratie lib\u00e9rale mais comme une guerre sainte contre le luth\u00e9rianisme.<\/p>\n
