Entre temps la Grande Guerre a boulevers\u00e9 l\u2019Europe. La Revanche de 1870, dont Maurice Barr\u00e8s s\u2019\u00e9tait fait le chantre eut lieu : le livre fut publi\u00e9 aux \u00e9ditions Plon en 1921. La victoire du 11 novembre 1918 fut aussi la sienne. Deux ans plus tard il mourra. Avec sans aucun doute le sentiment du devoir patriotique accompli. Dans ce livre il plonge son lecteur dans ce fleuve que se partagent Allemagne et France, fr\u00e8res ennemis qui doivent maintenant se r\u00e9concilier (\u00ab Il s\u2019agit de refouler la fatalit\u00e9 des invasions germaniques et d\u2019annexer cette marche intellectuelle pour pr\u00e9parer le mariage de la Moselle et du Rhin ! \u00bb figurait sur la couverture), dans ses plus belles l\u00e9gendes, dessinant une mythologie nouvelle, autant esth\u00e9tique que politique.<\/p>\n
